Mark Owen and Aaron Lewadniuk each notched three points as the Beavers doubled up the Portage Islanders 6-3 Saturday night. Carman’s first win this month now sees the Beavers trail the Isles 2-1 in the best-of-seven semi final.

Darren Bestland got the Beavers on the board with a shorthanded marker 2:16 into the first to kick off five straight Carman goals. James Van de Velde followed up Bestland’s shorty with a goal of his own and Jack Lotscher found the back of the net soon after to stake the hosts to a three goal first period lead.

Mark Owen scored a pair of goals in the second period to increase the Beaver lead to five before the Isles offense struck. Brett Brooks got the Islanders on the board late in the second with a power play marker and added a second mid way through the third, also on the man advantage, to cut the lead to three.

Lewadniuk and Tyler Harland traded goals just nine seconds apart late in the period but that’s as close as Portage would get, dropping Game 3 of the best-of-seven series.

Steve Christie picked up the win between the pipes with a 16 save performance while Ryan Person turned aside 23 shots in the loss.

Game 4 is Tuesday back in Portage la Prairie. Puck drop set for 8 p.m., at Stride Place.

Altona wins second straight in overtime to take series lead

Justin Augert continued his hot postseason with three goals and an assist – including the game tying goal and overtime winner – as the Maroons came back to beat the Mercs 6-5 Saturday night in Warren.

Keenan Wiebe, Mitch Doell and Steve Doell also scored in the Maroons victory as Altona goes in front in the best-of-seven semi final two games to one.

Dylan Hykawy, Scott Corbett, Braydon MacDonald, Kyle Luschinski, and Trent Genyk each scored in the losing effort for the Mercs, who after winning Game 1, have dropped both Games 2 and 3 in overtime.

Warren and Altona are back at it Tuesday in Altona. Puck drop set for 8 p.m.
