Altona police had what they call a steady but busy weekend during the Manitoba Sunflower Festival.
Police chief Perry Batchelor said they opened up 20 files on the weekend. "It's an increase," he said. "On (an average weekend) it's 10 to 12."
The files covered a wide variety of infractions, although several had to do with alcohol.
Two people were lodged under the Intoxicated Persons Detention Act, one 24 hour suspension was issued, and one ticket was given under the Liquor Control Act for having open liquor in a public place.
One motorist was ticketed for operating a vehicle without a licence as well.
Police also dealt with a family maintenance act issue, an assault, trespassing and mischief.
Batchelor said much of what they do during the festival does not result in charges. "A lot of the work we do is paperless on a weekend like that," he said.
Police worked hard at making their presence known, even having officers walk the festival grounds.
"There's a lot of high visibility patrols," he said. "We have a lot of visitors in the community that don't realize we have our own police."
By being visible, Altona Police hope to be proactive and discourage people from breaking the law in the first place.
